The National Survey of Student Engagement has been administered to freshmen and seniors at colleges and universities across the USA and Canada, since the spring of 2000, to gather information about the nature and the quality of their education. After each administration, participating schools are provided with an institutional report, including results for five benchmarks of effective educational practice. The purpose of this study was to examine the utility of these benchmark scores at a particular university. The results of a confirmatory factor analysis suggest that the benchmarks are not valid indicators of students’ perceptions at this school. Discussion regarding uses of national data collections for individual institutions is provided.
Discussions about the relationship of sports science to each of its disciplines can be traced back to the years of establishment of sports science. For the comparably young discipline of sports economics these considerations are currently still lacking. Historically, besides applying economic approaches to sports one can also identify non-economic traditions of dealing with economic phenomena in sports. Within both lines of tradition different terms for the phenomena to be examined are used. Reflecting the development of these two lines of tradition of sports economics with respect to the established philosophical positions of Popper’s falsificationism, to Kuhn’s paradigmatic development as a consequence of normal science and scientific revolution, as well as to Lakatos’ methodology of scientific research programs, a number of implications arise for the development status of sports economics as an economic discipline both for its position in relation to sports science and economic science and regarding developments of further theories. 相似文献
Parent support for reading is one of the many elements that may play a role in the development and sustainment of children’s
reading motivation; to date, however, research has focused much more on the role that parents play in their preschool and
primary-grade children’s reading than in their older children’s reading. Thus, this paper examines the findings and methodology
of empirical studies concerning the ways and extent to which parent support for reading relates to the reading motivations
and habits of students in the fourth through 12th grades. The review includes discussion of extant quantitative, qualitative,
and mixed-method studies, theoretical models from the reading domain applicable to the socialization of reading practices,
and extensive recommendations for future research. The dual purpose of this review is to present a sketch of the role of parents’
in adolescents’ reading motivation based on extant work and to encourage research that will help develop this sketch into
a fuller portrait. 相似文献
Examining a comprehensive set of papers (n = 1837) that were accepted for publication by the journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition (one of the prime chemistry journals in the world) or rejected by the journal but then published elsewhere, this study tested the extent to which the use of the freely available database Google Scholar (GS) can be expected to yield valid citation counts in the field of chemistry. Analyses of citations for the set of papers returned by three fee-based databases – Science Citation Index, Scopus, and Chemical Abstracts – were compared to the analysis of citations found using GS data. Whereas the analyses using citations returned by the three fee-based databases show very similar results, the results of the analysis using GS citation data differed greatly from the findings using citations from the fee-based databases. Our study therefore supports, on the one hand, the convergent validity of citation analyses based on data from the fee-based databases and, on the other hand, the lack of convergent validity of the citation analysis based on the GS data. 相似文献
Nations can be distinguished in terms of whether domestic or international research is cited. We analyzed the research output in the natural sciences of three leading European research economies (Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK) and ask where their researchers look for the knowledge that underpins their most highly-cited papers. Is one internationally oriented or is citation limited to national resources? Do the citation patterns reflect a growing differentiation between the domestic and international research enterprise? To evaluate change over time, we include natural-sciences papers published in the countries from three publication years: 2004, 2009, and 2014. The results show that articles co-authored by researchers from Germany or the Netherlands are less likely to be among the globally most highly-cited articles if they also cite “domestic” research (i.e. research authored by authors from the same country). To put this another way, less well-cited research is more likely to stand on domestic shoulders and research that becomes more highly-cited is more likely to stand on international shoulders. A possible reason for the results is that researchers “over-cite” the papers from their own country – lacking the focus on quality in citing. However, these differences between domestic and international shoulders are not visible for the UK. 相似文献
Several authors have proposed that a large number of unusual combinations of cited references in a paper point to its high creative potential (or novelty). However, it is still not clear whether the number of unusual combinations can really measure the creative potential of papers. The current study addresses this question on the basis of several case studies from the field of scientometrics. We identified some landmark papers in this field. Study subjects were the corresponding authors of these papers. We asked them where the ideas for the papers came from and which role the cited publications played. The results revealed that the creative ideas might not necessarily have been inspired by past publications. The literature seems to be important for the contextualization of the idea in the field of scientometrics. Instead, we found that creative ideas are the result of finding solutions to practical problems, result from discussions with colleagues, and profit from interdisciplinary exchange. The roots of the studied landmark papers are discussed in detail. 相似文献
